Who better than Johnnie Walker to honour one of the best shows in the last decade? This limited edition collection of blended whiskies garnered a lot of buzz when it was first announced last year as a successor to Johnnie Walker’s ‘White Walker’ expression.
A Song of Ice, Fire & Wights
As shown in the photo above, the collection consists of 3 different expressions which are appropriately named, A Song of Ice, A Song of Fire, and White Walker as an homage [SPOILER AHEAD] to the show’s final three main forces: The Starks, Targaryens & White Walkers.
Without further ado, let’s break down the three bottles:
1. A Song of Ice
Johnnie Walker A Song of Ice features that signature Johnnie Walker taste mixed in with a blend of single malts from Clynelish, one of Scotland’s most northern distilleries as a nod to the The House of Stark.
Further honouring the main family of the series, a wolf, the sigil of the Starks, is the centrepiece of this bottle accompanied by a frosted blue icy background. Taste-wise, this whisky is crisp and clean with an ABV of 40.2%
- Nose: Light, fruity, notes of butterscotch.
- Palate: Classic Johnnie Walker mixed with vanilla and honey notes over Clynelish’s highland florals, candle wax, and apple.
- Finish: Medium length, lingering sweetness.
2. A Song of Fire
Johnnie Walker A Song of Fire is fittingly rich and spicy mixed in with subtle smoke flavours drawn from the peated malts of the Caol Ila distillery. The idea behind this bottle was to emulate the fiery breath of dragons.
On the topic of dragons, this bottle was inspired by House Targaryen, more specifically their dragons which is the bottle’s centrepiece, draped in a fiery setting with deep-red colours. If you’re looking for a whisky with a pleasant burning sensation to it, look no further.
- Nose: Smoky (as it should be) with hints of warm toffee.
- Palate: Another Classic Johnnie Walker blend with vanilla and honey notes, noticeably warm and peaty.
- Finish: Medium to long, lingering whiff of smoke.
3. White Walker
The first of the three to be released, Johnnie Walker’s White Walker was released in celebration of the show’s final season back in 2018. Interestingly, this limited edition bottle utilises thermo-chromic ink leaving fans an icy surprise message when frozen.
Clearly inspired by the White Walkers, one of the main antagonists of the series, this expression of Johnnie Walker is best served ice cold. Winter has come, and it’s arrived in this bottle.
- Nose: Sweet caramel, notes of soft spice and dried fruit.
- Palate: Caramelized sugar, vanilla, and fresh red berries, spice notes, touch of cinnamon.
- Finish: Warm, spicy and lingering.
