Research Article Says Wine & Champagne Reduce The Risk of COVID-19

Early in the pandemic, there were reports of a 106-year-old woman who survived Covid. Mary Nicholson beat Covid not once but twice according to reports, and said that the secret to a long life is “a tipple of whisky at night”.

This news might not be proven as no official research had been done on the matter. In fact, excessive drinking will lead to lower immunity in the body. So it’s generally not a good idea to over-drink during a pandemic.

However, a research paper by the Shenzhen Mental Health Centre and the Chongqing Army Military Medical University Department of Neurosurgery in China has suggested that wine and champagne might have the chance to reduce the risk of Covid.

According to the paper, “The COVID-19 risk appears to vary across different alcoholic beverage subtypes, frequency, and amount. Red wine, white wine, and champagne have chances to reduce the risk of COVID-19.”

The study involves 473,957 subjects, 16,559 of whom tested positive for COVID-19. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the associations of alcohol consumption with COVID-19 risk and associated mortality.

The objective of the study is to evaluate the associations of status, amount, and frequency of alcohol consumption across different alcoholic beverages with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) risk and associated mortality.

And the results?

Subjects who consumed alcohol double above the guidelines had a higher risk of COVID-19, which is what we knew before this.

However, “consumption of red wine above or double above the guidelines played protective effects against COVID-19.”

Consumption of beer and cider increased the COVID-19 risk, regardless of the frequency and amount of alcohol intake, but low-frequency of consumption of fortified wine (1–2 glasses/week) within guidelines had a protective effect against the virus.

The paper noted, “High frequency of consumption of spirits (≥5 glasses/week) within guidelines increased the COVID-19 risk, whereas the high frequency of consumption of white wine and champagne above the guidelines decreased the COVID-19 risk.”

Wine and champagne have been noted to have health benefits deriving from the skin of the grapes used in their production. Apart from anti-aging effects, some health experts claim that red wine contains antioxidants that may help prevent coronary artery disease, the condition that leads to heart attacks.
