The Ups & Downs of Ardbeg

The Ardbeg Distllery was founded in the year 1815 by John MacDougall. Over the course of history, the ownership of Ardbeg would change hands and even close down – once in the 80s and then again in the year 1996.

Despite Ardbeg’s tumultuous and unpredictable journey, Ardbeg has grown to become a global cult favourite winning multiple awards throughout the 2000s which eventually led to a trip into outer space.

Ardbeg actually sent a vial of unmatured whisky malt into orbit to study the effects of near-zero gravity on the flavour of whisky – leading to the release of the Ardbeg Supernova.

The following year, Ardbeg celebrated their 200th anniversary with the release of Ardbeg Perpetuum. Today, Ardbeg has one of the most loyal fanbases in the world and is still producing new expressions of their excellent Islay whisky.

1. Ardbeg 10

Holding the title of most classic Ardbeg expression, the Ardbeg 10 is a very raw and smoky whisky. That being said, once your palate has adapted to its smokiness you’d be able to identify other flavours such as the 10’s lingering hint of lime.

2. Ardbeg Uigeadail

Arguably the most popular expression among fans of Ardbeg, the Uigeadail gets its name from a loch (lake) located near Ardbeg’s distillery. The word ‘Uigeadail’ means ‘deep and mysterious place’ which is a very fitting description of this whisky.

While it shares similarities to the 10, the Ardbeg Uigeadail has a distinctive oily texture which stands out. Taste-wise, the Uigeadail preserves Ardbeg’s signature smokiness paired with a hint of sweetness reminiscent of coffee.

Additionally, slight nodes of spiciness similar to black pepper can also be found in this expression.

3. Ardbeg An Oa

On the topic of sweetness, Ardbeg’s An Oa definitely takes the cake. Named after the Oa peninsular on Islay, this expression has been described as a ‘more rounded version of Ardbeg’ which maintains the distillery’s signature characteristics.

Much of the sweetness in Ardbeg An Oa is a result of maturing in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks which brings out a salty-spicy sweetness similar to chocolate, figs and raisins. On the nose, Ardbeg An Oa delivers a spring of smokiness intertwined with sweetness.

4. Ardbeg Wee Beastie

The Ardbeg Wee Beastie is the latest addition to Ardbeg’s permanent line of whiskies. This 5 year old expression packs a stronger punch in the smoke department when compared to the 10 year old.

Upon opening a bottle, the Wee Beastie instantly hits your nose with a strong aroma of fruit mixed in with campfire-smoke. Taste-wise, it is much livelier being more smoky yet sweeter in comparison to other Ardbeg expressions.
